Financial aid is allocated for new private charging stations installed on parking spaces located in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Applications for obtaining financial aid must be submitted no later than 12 months after the last invoice was issued in connection with the investment.

The application should be submitted to the Environmental administration via a form:

• part to be completed by the applicant requesting aid
• part to be completed by the company in charge of carrying out the installation work of the charging point.

• The amount of financial aid for a charging station equipped with an integrated or external interface compatible with the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) standard, Version 1.6 or higher, amounts to 50% of the cost of the station and its installation, excluding value added tax, but without exceeding €1,200.
• This maximum amount rises to €1,650 if the charging station is integrated into a collective intelligent charging management system as soon as it is installed.

• The financial aid amounts to 50% of the cost of purchasing the charging station and its installation, excluding VAT. The sum shall not exceed €750.
• This maximum amount is €1,200 if the charging station is equipped with an integrated or external interface compatible with the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) standard, version 1.6 or higher.

For reasons of comfort and safety, when purchasing an electric car, it is recommended to install a wall-mounted charging station for private use at home. Compared to a standard household socket, a wallbox allows you to charge more safely, at higher power, and with less energy loss.

To ensure proper operation and maximum convenience, the following recommendations should be taken into account:

• In the case of a standard household connection (single-family house) of 27 kW (40 amps), a maximum charging power of 11 kW is permitted. This corresponds to around 50 kilometers of range charged in 1 hour. Note that with the introduction of the new low-voltage network tariffs effective since 1 January 2025, it is recommended to reduce the charging power to 5.5 kW to avoid additional costs linked to reference power.
• For load shedding to relieve the power grid in the event of overload, the grid operator requires that all charging stations with a capacity ≥ 7 kW be connected to the smart electricity meter (SMARTY), either via a dedicated contact in the charging station or via a cut-off relay.
• For additional features such as charging using surplus electricity from a photovoltaic system, delayed charging, or the ability to record charging sessions for reimbursement by an employer, it is recommended to install a so-called “smart” charging station. In this case, your charging station must be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, LAN, 4G, or even Bluetooth, through a smartphone app directly connected to your charger.

Please note: All installation work must be carried out by a qualified electrician, who can advise you on the most suitable solution for your situation and needs.

According to the Grand Ducal Regulation of 22 December 2006[*], as amended, vehicles in categories M1, M2 and M3 driven exclusively by an electric motor or by a motor powered by a fuel cell are subject to an annual tax of 30 euros. Hybrid vehicles operating with an internal combustion engine associated with an electric motor or a fuel cell are taxed according to the fuel system (petrol or diesel).

Chargy, the network of public charging stations in Luxembourg, will over the coming years achieve a total of 800 stations, i.e. 1,600 charging points. At least one station will be installed in each Luxembourg municipality to guarantee national coverage for the network.
Currently, there are more than 350 Chargy stations (700 charging points) spread across Luxembourg. Therefore, you can charge your electric car near frequently visited places in urban areas, such as P&R, hospitals, administrative buildings, supermarkets, etc.
 
Access to the Chargy stations is straightforward with your mKaart. This means that the various Verkéiersverbond and Chargy prepaid products and services can be found on a single card, thus providing greater convenience on the move.

In order to charge your electric car or plug-in hybrid at Chargy stations and Chargy OK stations, you must have signed a contract with a charging service provider. Find the list of service providers active in Luxembourg at chargy.lu. Your charging service provider will also give you your mKaart, which will serve as your identifier on the Chargy and Chargy OK stations. If you already have a mKaart compatible with our network, your supplier will add the Chargy product directly to your mKaart.

Your electricity consumption will either be invoiced to you by the supplier with whom you have a contract or debited until the credit runs out if you have a prepaid card.
The MyChargy platform also allows the user to easily manage costs.

When you are abroad you can access selected charging stations with your Chargy subscription. Ask your charging service provider if they have such a contract and which charging stations you will be given access to.

You also have the option of using one of the various existing applications that give you access to one of the various roaming platforms or portals. These platforms or portals allow you to locate and use charging stations abroad and easily manage payment of your charges when travelling.
