Promoting alternatives to buying new

Discover initiatives that support a circular consumption

The addition of initiatives further enriches b.circular, making it easier to access solutions that drive the circular economy.

Sharing, reuse, repair, refurbishment and upcycling initiatives offer practical alternatives to buying new products. By making better use of existing resources and extending product lifespans, they help reduce waste and promote more sustainable consumption patterns. Often driven by local actors, social enterprises or community-based projects, they provide accessible solutions for everyday needs.

Through b.circular, these initiatives gain more visibility across key product categories such as office supplies, furniture, electronic devices, textiles and food.

How are initiatives selected?

The initiatives featured on b.circular are selected based on key circular economy principles that provide alternatives to purchasing new products, with a focus on optimising resource use and extending product life cycles. All initiatives listed on the platform are based in Luxembourg, promoting local circular solutions that are tailored to the national context.

Initiatives for office supplies, furniture, electronic devices, and textiles

Making better use of existing resources through sharing

Some initiatives facilitate access to products without requiring ownership. Through sharing schemes, users gain temporary or collective access to products when needed and can make better use of existing resources while reducing the demand for new ones. Examples of existing initiatives that promote the sharing of various products include Repair&Share and Fixit!.

Maintaining and extending product lifespans through different strategies

Other selected initiatives are dedicated to extending product lifespans through one or more of the following strategies: reuse, repair, refurbish, and upcycling.

Reuse
Reuse refers to the continued use of a product by another user for the same purpose. This is most commonly seen through second-hand options where products in good condition continue to deliver their original function instead of being discarded. Examples of such initiatives on b.circular include “Mol Nach Emol”, “gutt saach” and various second-hand shops.

Repair
Repair focuses on maintaining and fixing existing products to extend their lifespan and usability. The platform features initiatives such as repair guides, municipal bonuses (especially for home appliances), and Repair&Share. The “Right to Repair” further supports this approach by reducing barriers for consumers and encouraging longer product lifetimes rather than their premature replacement.

Refurbishment
Refurbishment means restoring and improving products to a functional or upgraded condition. This can involve replacing internal components or improving external elements, giving products a second life with renewed value. Examples in the furniture category include Okkasiounsbuttik and Atelier Klimbim.

Upcycling
Upcycling goes one step further by transforming discarded materials or products into new items with a different purpose, often of equal or higher value than the original. This approach not only reduces waste but also fosters creativity and innovation by turning existing resources into entirely new, value-added products (e.g., Lët'z Refashion for textiles).

Food initiatives

Food is treated separately because it is consumed and naturally breaks down, contrary to other products that can be designed to be reused or repaired. As a result, the focus shifts toward preventing waste and reducing food loss. Key initiatives on b.circular therefore promote food sharing, redistribution, and the recovery of surplus food, while also encouraging more sustainable eating habits such as local, seasonal, and plant-based products. Examples include initiatives like Foodsharing, national awareness campaigns such as “Antigaspi” and social grocery stores.

Making circular initiatives easier to find

By integrating these initiatives, b.circular highlights practical pathways towards a more circular economy, making existing solutions visible and actionable across a range of everyday product categories.

Whether through sharing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, or upcycling, these initiatives show that many alternatives already exist in different forms today. The key is to connect these efforts, make them visible, and enable broader participation.
