Is the home battery still a mystery to you?
That is perfectly normal: a battery is not a stand-alone solution, but one component of an overall home energy management system. It can help optimise your self-consumption of solar electricity – provided it is properly sized and suited to your specific situation.
Do you already have photovoltaic panels?
In this case, a battery can help you to:
- make better use of your own solar production,
- reduce unnecessary feed-in to the grid,
- supply certain electricity needs in the evening or at night.
You do not have a photovoltaic system yet?
Before getting started, it is important to think about the overall sizing:
panel capacity, battery power, electrical uses, consumption habits…
Poor sizing can lead to an investment that is unnecessarily high compared to your actual needs.

To demystify the topic: a short quiz, inspired by our colleague Nagisa, expert in e-mobility and energy optimisation
This quiz is based on Nagisa’s explanations in the video capsule:
Intro:
Video: Klima-Agence logo and text displayed on screen: ‘Home battery & smart energy management’.
Audio: Warm female/male voiceover introduces the topic.
Question 1: ‘What is a home battery?’
Video: Question text displayed on screen.
Audio: Voice-over:
‘It's a storage battery. It allows you to store surplus electricity generated, for example by solar panels, for later use in the evening or at night when production decreases.’
Question 2: ‘What can I do with my surplus electricity?’
Video: Three options appear on screen:
A) Feed it into the grid
B) Share it in an electricity sharing group
C) Store it in a domestic battery
A 3-second pause for reflection is indicated by a graphic indicator (e.g. clock or progress bar).
Audio: Voice-over:
"All three options are correct. A domestic battery is not always the best solution. There are other ways to optimise your surplus. If you choose the battery, it is important to know your production and consumption and to calculate the profitability.‘
Question 3: ’What tool can I use to optimise the use of my home battery?"
Video: Three options are displayed:
A) Home Energy Management System (HEMS)
B) Heat pump
C) Electric car
3-second pause with the same graphic indicator.
Audio: Voice-over:
‘A HEMS, or Home Energy Management System, is a smart module that monitors, controls and optimises electricity flows in your home to reduce your bill. It can manage the charging station, home battery, solar panels and heat pump, and integrate dynamic tariffs or weather forecasts.’

What is a home battery?
A storage battery allows you to keep surplus electricity produced by your photovoltaic panels and use it later (in the evening, at night, or during peak demand).
It can also be used intelligently to benefit from dynamic electricity tariffs, by storing energy when prices are low and consuming it when prices are high, thereby optimising savings and energy autonomy.
What can you do with your surplus electricity
- Feed it into the grid
- Share it within an energy community
- Store it in a battery
All of these options are valid. The right choice depends on:
- the amount of surplus you generate,
- your consumption profile (day/night, weekday/weekend),
- your objectives (cost-effectiveness, autonomy, sharing).
In short: there is no single solution, but a range of options that can be combined according to your needs.
How can you make the most of your battery?
With a Home Energy Management System (HEMS) – an intelligent home energy management system.
This smart module automatically optimises your electricity flows:
- it monitors solar production and consumption in real time,
- it decides whether electricity should be used, stored, or fed into the grid,
- it can even take weather forecasts or dynamic tariffs into account to further optimise consumption.
Result: every kilowatt-hour produced is used at the right time, where it is most useful – whether to charge the battery, power a heat pump, household appliances, or an electric vehicle.
Key takeaways
- A home battery is not a universal solution: its cost-effectiveness depends on your consumption profile and installation.
- When combined with an energy management system, it becomes a powerful lever to reduce electricity bills and maximise self-consumption.
- Other options, such as electricity sharing or feeding surplus into the grid, can also be considered.
