Geothermal energy: heat from the ground

What is geothermal energy?

Did you know that a renewable and inexhaustible source of energy is hidden under our feet? Geothermal energy is in fact based on heat energy accumulated beneath the Earth’s surface. A device called a geothermal heat exchanger is used, coupled with a heat pump to take advantage of the heat stored in the ground to heat a house, for example.

The importance of surface geothermal energy has been growing in recent years. Luxembourg has a rich potential in this area – one that deserves to be exploited. Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source and offers an attractive solution, especially for the needs of new buildings which consume less energy overall.

The advantages of geothermal energy

  • One of the main advantages of geothermal energy is that it is a sustainable energy source. To protect the environment, geothermal heating should be preferred to gas or oil heating (fossil fuels).
  • Another advantage of this energy is that its operating costs are low, so the electricity costs associated with heating remain limited.
  • The management of geothermal energy heating is fully automatic and thus ensures optimal comfort. What’s more, its operation does not involve any risk.
  • No storage space is required, as with heating oil.
  • Geothermal energy is a technology of the future, in which renewable energy is exploited at a decentralised level. It is an integral part of the pillars designated for the energy mix of the future in the Rifkin strategy.

It should be kept in mind that this type of heating requires only one expense, which is amortised after only 10 years. In view of the substantial investment subsidies available and the low operating costs, geothermal energy is an attractive option for private individuals.
